The Automated Lab Notebook for AI

Keep every Claude Code conversation. On your own computer.

Rootz Archive keeps an exact copy of every Claude Code conversation, and every file Claude edits, and lets your AI search it: "what did we decide about the login flow last month?" Free for individual users. No account.

April 15, 2026: the day we lost 160 sessions

Claude Code silently deleted 160 session files: 60,702 messages and three months of AI collaboration. The auto-memory system had no trace of an active partnership with design docs, CEO engagement and six working files.

"Claude forgot everything. The Rootz Archive didn't."

One call to the Rootz archive recovered the whole context in seconds: every conversation, every decision, every file touched.

AI memory is opt-in, sparse and deletable. An archive is automatic, exact and yours.

Why Archive

Claude forgets. Not because it's careless: because that's how it works.

Video not playing? Watch "Why every Claude Code user needs an archive" on YouTube (1 min 40 s).

Claude Code keeps each conversation for 30 days, then deletes it without a message. (Anthropic docs) You can raise cleanupPeriodDays yourself; Archive adds a searchable, verified copy, not only longer retention.
Long before that, Claude compacts the conversation to make room. "Full tool outputs and intermediate reasoning are gone" from what Claude can see. (Anthropic docs)

So everyone learns tricks

CLAUDE.md files, auto memory, hand-off notes, pasting a summary into the next chat, memory-bank files, memory servers. They help, and you should keep using them: they're curated guidance Claude loads every session. But each is a summary someone chose to write. It's partial, and it goes stale unless maintained.

Archive keeps what actually happened

Exact. A byte-for-byte copy of every Claude Code conversation, including everything before each compaction, plus sub-agent conversations and every file Claude edits.
Automatic. Nothing to write or maintain.
On your own computer. Archive sends nothing to Rootz.
Your AI can search it, across every past session: "what did we decide about the login flow last month?"

What it's doing for us (one laptop, last 30 days)

Claude reached into its archive 60 times, in 17 of 265 sessions, on 14 different days.
55 older conversations (21,966 messages) had already been deleted from that laptop by the 30-day cleanup. We still have them only because a copy had been sent to another machine.

Use both. CLAUDE.md for what Claude should do. Archive for what actually happened.

Why we built it: Keep Every Claude Code Conversation → (the Rootz blog)

Rootz Archive

A Claude Code plugin, free for individual users. It keeps an exact copy of what you and Claude did, on your computer, and lets your AI search it.

Install in two commands

claude plugin marketplace add rootz-global/rootz-archive
claude plugin install rootz-archive@rootz

Then start a new Claude Code session and type /rootz-archive:accept to accept the use licence. Nothing is captured until you do. It needs Node.js 22.13 or newer. Then just ask Claude: "What did we decide about the login flow last month?"

Free for individual users, no account. Workgroups: paid, later. The plugin makes no network connections.
Exact copies. Every conversation (including the part before Claude compacts it), sub-agents, and every file Claude edited, byte for byte.
On your computer. The exact copies go in ~/.rootz-archive/vault, and a search index beside them. Only you can read them. It never copies settings or credentials.
Claude Desktop too (search). Open the .mcpb file with Claude Desktop, then tick "I accept the Rootz Archive Use Licence" in Settings → Extensions. Capture still comes from the Claude Code plugin.
Nothing to Rootz. Rootz Archive sends nothing to us. What your AI reads from it goes to your AI's provider, as with anything you show it.
Captured, not backed up. It keeps a copy; it is not a backup service. Keep your own backups.
See it working. Type /rootz-archive:dashboard for a page on your computer showing what's protected, integrity checks, the time span and how often your AI used it.
Upgrade in place. Rootz Desktop opens the same archive with nothing to import.

Get Rootz Archive on GitHub

Only release news for Rootz Archive, a few times a year. Your address is encrypted when it arrives and is never sold or shared. To be removed, email steven@rootz.global.

Also from Rootz: Rootz Receipts. Archive keeps what happened; Receipts proves where an AI's output came from. Every result carries a signed origin receipt that anyone can check, and when one AI's output becomes the next one's input, the receipt goes with it.

New in 0.7: share a conversation, with proof. Type /rootz-archive:share, or ask Claude to share a past session. You get a folder on your computer with the exact conversation and a capture receipt. You send it; the recipient checks it at receipts.rootz.global/verify, in their browser, with nothing uploaded. Change one byte and the check fails. Read it before you send it: it holds the whole conversation.

Which AI Tools Work Today

Two different things. Capture: an automatic, exact copy of the AI's conversations. Connect: the AI can search your archive (and save to it when asked) through MCP. "Untested" means we have not yet run it ourselves; we mark each one as we do.

Connect Another AI Tool Beta

Lets the tool search your archive. It does not capture that tool's own conversations; today only Claude Code is captured.

First, once

Install Rootz Archive (above), type /rootz-archive:accept, then start one new Claude Code session. That writes a launcher that every other tool uses, and keeps it current when the plugin updates:

~/.rootz-archive/bin/archive-free-mcp.mjs

In the settings below, replace /Users/you with your home folder (on Windows, C:\Users\you). Most tools need the full path; ~ is not expanded. Node.js 22.13 or newer must be on the path; if a desktop app cannot find node, use its full path (which node).

Claude desktop app, Cursor, Windsurf (now Devin Desktop), Gemini CLI

Add this to the tool's MCP settings file: Claude desktop claude_desktop_config.json · Cursor ~/.cursor/mcp.json · Windsurf / Devin Desktop ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json · Gemini CLI ~/.gemini/settings.json (or run gemini mcp add --scope user archive-free node /Users/you/.rootz-archive/bin/archive-free-mcp.mjs).

Gemini CLI only connects MCP servers in a folder you trust. The first time you run gemini in a project folder, choose "Trust folder"; in an untrusted folder the archive is listed but not started. Check with gemini mcp list: it should say "Connected".

{ "mcpServers": { "archive-free": {
    "command": "node",
    "args": ["/Users/you/.rootz-archive/bin/archive-free-mcp.mjs"] } } }

VS Code (GitHub Copilot, agent mode)

Add to your user mcp.json:

{ "servers": { "archive-free": {
    "type": "stdio", "command": "node",
    "args": ["/Users/you/.rootz-archive/bin/archive-free-mcp.mjs"] } } }

OpenAI Codex CLI

Add to ~/.codex/config.toml:

[mcp_servers.archive-free]
command = "node"
args = ["/Users/you/.rootz-archive/bin/archive-free-mcp.mjs"]

Then ask the tool: "Search my archive for the login flow decision." Answers end with "— Source: Rootz Archive · this computer". Search and capture both start once you have accepted the licence with /rootz-archive:accept. Tried one of these? Tell us what happened: steven@rootz.global.

Three Things, Not One

Archive is not a note-taking app. It's three products in one, each solving a different problem.

1

Archive

An exact record of what happened. Claude Code conversations are captured automatically today; other AI tools can save to it through MCP.

search_conversations "authentication design"
2

Reference

A searchable knowledge base. Search by words today; by meaning and with a knowledge graph in Rootz Desktop.

semantic_search "performance optimization"
3

Memory

Contextual recall for AI sessions. Start a new conversation and your AI can look up what you worked on before.
